In episode 36, I talk about sleep, why it’s so good for us, what can make it go south, and 21 Safe and Simple things that you can easily do to give yourself the best chance to have the highest quality sleep possible.

The importance of good sleep

Sleep is very important for people of every age. There is a close relationship between the quality of sleep you get and the quality of your life…and as we age, it becomes even more important because regular, quality sleep is vital for good concentration and memory, which as you know is often not what it used to be for us boomers. Sleep allows our bodies to repair the   cellular damage that occurs during the day.

Regular quality sleep supports our immune systems to help ward off the legions of viruses and disease that are relentlessly assaulting our bodies. Studies also suggest that poor sleep may contribute to increased inflammation, which may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Studies also show that people who sleep on an average of seven to eight hours a night live longer and better than the people who experience too little or too much sleep.

In one study, from the Obesity Society, it was shown that just one night of poor sleep could be the equivalent of 6 months of consuming a poor, high-fat diet when it comes to insulin impairment, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes. Imagine what a week of sleep deprivation could do to your body.

Okay, so the big takeaway here is that maintaining a healthy lifestyle and improving longevity depends on establishing and maintaining healthy sleep habits. I’m sure that we’re all on board here.

So now here’s the rub for us boomers. As we age, it often becomes more difficult to get regular quality sleep. There are many factors that can rob us of a healthy night’s sleep. Heck, just worrying about being able to get a good nights sleep can deprive you of your beauty rest. Quality sleep can be very elusive. The good news is that studies show that the number one, numero uno thing that we can do to improve our sleep is to establish healthy sleep hygiene. Download the free PDF to get the entire list which contains detailed instructions for multiple proven techniques to help you sleep better.

Improving your sleep hygiene with some or all of these tips will go a long way to help you to consistently get a good night’s sleep, but some sleeping disorders and problems require more aggressive means, so if you try everything to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep and it still is a struggle than be sure to see your doctor. There are many advances in the methods for helping people with severe sleeping problems. You don’t want to just give up and live with it because it will adversely affect your health and the quality of your life as well as your partner’s.

In episode 34, Chris Crowley, author of the Younger Next Year books, talks about how exercise and a healthy lifestyle can turn back the clock … and he’s living proof! Chris has been very influential to me over the last decade. He is the New York Times best-selling co– author, with Henry S. Lodge M.D., of Younger Next Year – A guide to Living like 50 until you’re 80 and beyond.

This book has been instrumental to me for establishing my adaptive fitness training business. It is my bible and number one source for motivating my boomer and beyond clients to establish an active and healthy lifestyle. I love his no BS, non-negotiable approach to the exercise required to truly turn back your biological clock. Chris has also authored Younger Next Year for Women, Thinner Next Year, The Younger Next Year Journal and a soon to be released book on Fitness.

Beside an author of books and his Younger Next Year blog, he is also an attorney, a keynote speaker and the host of total immersion retreats in Aspen, Colorado. Needless to say retirement is not in his lexicon.

In the interview, Chris answers the following questions:

  • Tell us a bit about who you are and what you do.
  • Your book, Younger next year was very influential to me personally and it obviously is very biographical for you. Can you tell us the story of how you came to write that book?
  • In your teachings you talk about the good life as being a 3 legged stool. What do you mean by that?
  • It has now been 10 years since you wrote Younger next year and obviously you are your own testimonial for your teachings. How has adapting this lifestyle affected your own life up to now?
  • A lot of us boomers find it difficult to adapt to a healthy lifestyle that we can stick with. What do you see as the biggest mistake that most baby boomers make when it comes to trying to establish a healthy lifestyle?
  • In your book, you make references to Kedges. What are Kedges and why are they so important?
  • You also started to host retreats in Aspen, Colorado. Can you tell us a bit about these total immersion and mini retreats?
  • Do you have any parting advice that you’d like to share with your fellow boomers?

This is very important information that millions of veterans are never going to get because it is kept secret by the Veterans Affair Administration. Be sure to share this with any and all veterans and families with veterans that you know. This benefit helps our veterans who need it the most including homeless veterans and those who are in crucial need of daily assistance just to survive.

In episode 32 I’m very honored to have as my guest Debbie Burak. Debbie is the founder of VeteranAaid.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and assisting veterans and their families with applying for a little known benefit program available through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Debbie Burak is one tough and tenacious woman on a mission to get the word out to inform and assist veterans and their families with this benefit. Debbie’s personal story is heart wrenching and yet she was able to use the power from her heartache to launch VeteranAid.org, the number one most accessed website for assisting veterans and their families with obtaining more information and helping them through the entire process for obtaining this benefit…at no cost to the veteran or their families. Debbie’s efforts and persistence has helped many thousands of veterans and their families to get the benefits that they earned. She is truly an inspiration. She is a hero.
